In March, 2009, an initial meeting of businesses in the Grant-Valkaria area was hosted by Lissette Kolar, a member of the Town Council. More than 36 local businesses were represented at that meeting. There was a definite consensus that we should consider forming a local business association.
Since that initial meeting, two more meetings were held. The businesses who attended made a firm commitment to the formation of an active local business group. At the third meeting, the group decided to incorporate and move forward.
All present volunteered to assist by telephoning each and every business in the area to personally invite them to the June 2009 meeting. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month at 7 PM.
Until the group can formally organize and hold elections, the group has an interim chair and an interim secretary/treasurer. Additionally, the group has formed three subgroups, each with its own interim chair. The subgroups are Storefront Businesses, Rural Businesses, and, Home-Based Businesses.
All attendees have agreed that networking and working together to grow our businesses are highly important goals. The attendees have also agreed that they wish to remain independent of other business groups. A strong focus will be on local issues affecting our ability to start and grow a business.
